Mollart Produces Unique World-Leading MD1 BTA Gundrilling Machine

MOLLART HAS DONE IT AGAIN! WE HAVE PRODUCED A TRUE MD1 BTA GUNDRILLING MACHINE CAPABLE OF UP TO 50MM DRILLING IN EXOTIC MATERIALS SUCH AS, INCONEL 718 AND GUNDRILLING DOWN TO 5MM, ALL ON THE SAME MACHINE. SET UP CHANGES ARE AS LOW AS 10 MINUTES FROM ONE SYSTEM TO THE OTHER. THIS PROCESS HAS PROVEN DIFFICULT IN THE PAST BUT THANKS TO SOME CLEVER BUT EFFECTIVE DESIGN, IT IS NOW VIABLE TO GO BETWEEN THE TWO SYSTEMS WITHOUT COMPROMISE.

Unique Design – MD1 BTA Gundrilling

The achievement is down to our unique design for the induction of coolant into the spindle for gun drilling. This new design will now make it possible to split the pressure head and keep it sealed to perform the BTA drilling while having it open when drilling with the gun drilling setup. Mollart has developed two hydrostatic seals so that the equipment is permanently connected to the correct pump. With literally a change of a switch and the tooling, it is now possible to do either BTA drilling or gundrilling. 

There are many companies that have a need for the dual drilling requirements of BTA and gundrilling. This solution will enable one piece of equipment to be employed instead of two, saving footprint space on the shop floor and the time changing over the machine. 

The machine now only uses one bushing system to deal with BTA / Gundrilling tooling and the same location system is employable across both systems too.

Aerospace Project – Exceeding Customer Demands

The machine pictured has a 1500 drilling depth and is also fitted with counter-rotation for the most accurate components. The first machine is going to an aerospace project, where the accuracy of the drilling and surface finish in the parts is fundamental. Mollart achieved run-out tolerances of 0.030mm TIR over 500mm drilling depth and surface finish 0.8 Ra in 15 – 5 PH material in a hardness condition of 30 HRC. On the gun drilling side, an 8mm hole over 300mm was drilled in a High Chrome alloy 40 HRC and the surface finish was 0.4 Ra and concentricity 0.020mm over 300mm. 

The performance of the equipment has exceeded the customers’ demands and we are sure this will be another world-beater from the Mollart stable.
