THE SURFACE FINISH OF THE HOLE, POSITION OF THE HOLE AND THE INTERSECT BETWEEN THEM, IS OF GREAT IMPORTANCE TO THE LATEST GENERATION OF HOT RUNNERS FOR THE INJECTION MOULDING INDUSTRY.

Keeping the plastic molten without turbulence or dead areas inside the hot runner feeding system is crucial to the top performers in this business. 

Mollart has addressed this need with the latest generation of deep hole drilling tooling and deep hole drilling machinery so that our customers have the best solution available on the market.

Materials

The mould steels used are materials such as P20 or H13 Tool Steel typical Hardness 30 – 35 HRC prior to machining.

The Objective

Our subcontract team was given the objective by the customer to bring the surface finish to 0.08Ra or better and minimize any miss match and deviation of the holes.  You can expect this type of finish from honing or burnishing but is a tall order for deep hole drilling, especially considering with a normal finish we would regularly expect 0.9 – 1.8Ra. 

Special consideration had to be given to the following:

  • The careful selection of Botek tooling.
  • Process oil and the feeds. 
  • Speeds and the right machine and software.  
The Solution

Special modifications to the tools were implemented, which raised the finish to the highest possible level without compromising the performance or precision of the tool. Hand finishing, polishing and blending were reduced to an absolute minimum, resulting in a higher quality job, increased efficiency and reduced time to market.

Utilizing Mollart’s PRB 40 Prismatic Gundrilling Machine we were able to take advantage of the ability to rotate the table 360°, which enabled us to access all sides of the tool. This together with innovative fixturing and tooling solutions meant we were able to reduce the setup time, with implementation being done in one setup.

The Advantage of Unique Features

The unique feature of the PRB 40 allowed us to utilise the BT40 milling spindle to achieve thread milling and counter bore’s on Ø with tolerance of +- 0.025mm.
